I am a non-Indian dancer. For me it was through my parents that I was
exposed to Indian Classical Dance. I was 2 years old when this
happened. Since it happened when I was so young, I don't remember
what exactly attracted me to it. However, I definitely think the
beautiful costumes and jewelry had something to do with it. Now that
I'm 19 grown up, my love and desire to pursue Bharata Natyam is much
deeper than that. I enjoy learning about all the rich mythology and
culture of India. For me, dance in general is just a wonderful vehicle of
expression. Specifically, with my study of Bharata Natyam, I really
enjoy the physical aspect-wide range of movements that promote
physically fitness and good health. And of course, it is a means of
spiritual expression and becoming more aware of the divine. So, that's
why Indian classical dance is such a big part of my life.
As far why not other western styles of dance, it's just because of what
I was exposed to. I really like the idea of the stories that are told
through the dance, where as in other styles, it can be rather abstract,
so I guess it's a personal preference. Hope this makes some sense out
of the issue.
