Dear Nithya:
I come from a family who has no artistes on borh sides of my family. When I did my arangetram in 1964, my grandparents scolded my parents and asked them to stop dance classes for me. From those days of 'stigma' for Brahmin girls to learn Bharatanatyam to the present time when Brahmins dominate the dance and music scene is a long journey. However, it is sad that you were not allowed to continue your in born talent and love for the art. My parents faced a great deal of oppostion from the family but not the community who saw me as some kind of youth beacon in the 60's and early 70's when there were fewer dancers in the field. Even today my family asks me "what I do to keep myself busy". This is because they are all in business and I am the sole person in the arts. But that is how life is.. strange and unpredictable!
