It really depends on the type of competition and if there is a time limit (which there usually is). A varnam (or even a swarajathi) is ideal to showcase both nrtta and abhinaya but it's unlikely that judges for a competition with so many applicants want to sit around watching a half-hour long piece.

Are you from the U.S.? Is this by any chance the NFAA Presidential Scholars competition? I've done it...
