There is a book I think everyone should check out if they want to get a good grasp on the history of dance and its evolution in relation to caste. It is entitled Bharata Natyam: From Temple to Theatre by Anne-Marie Gaston. Many of you may have read it already, but if not, it's worth at least a skim. I used this book extensively while doing an anthropology term paper on Bharata Natyam; it's just fascinating.
