I completely agree with both Sarayu and Geetha. hmm.. contradicting? Well, on the one hand when everyone is free to have their own dialect, it becomes unpardonable when you use dialect and butcher ancient literature while singing for Bharatanatyam (or simply singing itself).
So to sum up, yes people, you can talk your own dialect. But when it comes to singing a gem of a literature piece, PLEASE DONT. Can you imagine if someone butchered thirukkural like this:
Instead of saying
"serivarindhu seermai payakkum arivarindhu aatrim adanga perin" if someone said,
" SHerivarindhu SHeermai payakkum arivarindhu aatrim adanga perin"?
It is similar to reciting silappadhikaaram in Madras baashai. I am neither for brahmin dialect nor madras dialect when it comes to literature but only and only for the accurate pronunciation.
On a different note, have you noticed that this does not happen when people recite Hindi literature? Everyone who knows Hindi recites it properly - not with a dialect, but accurately. I dont understand why Tamilians dont do that.
