I think people are missing the point entirely. The arts for all
their spiritual, cultural and immaterial contributions are still professions.
The more we romanticize and mystify the arts, the less successful we can
ever be materially as artists. And ofcourse that means less and less people
will practice the arts. Don't get me wrong. I do feel that as artists we
have many responsibilities to our respective art forms. But the same holds
for any profession. A doctor is supposed to uphold many high "ideals" but
doing so need not come in the way of making a living. The integrity of
a profession need not be affected by the need to make money. I don't understand
why people think earning a living in an honest way is crass! So if there
are rich dancers naming them is not a way of "pointing fingers". If anything,
it is a way of paying complement to them!
