Dr. Ananda Shankar Jayant premieres her latest ekaharya, Shringara Darpanam, on Friday the 2nd of December 2011  at 7.15pm at Saptaparni, Banjara Hills,  Hyderabad, on the opening day of the three day dance festival Abhinaya Sudha presented by the Kuchipudi Dance Centre, New Delhi,.

Shringara Darpanam is a unique solo dance feature of rare Annamacharya krithis, performed in an ekaharya format, with the selected keerthanas arranged in a manner similar to the moods and resonances of  Jayadeva’s  Gita Govindam.

This is Ananda’s 6th such production, that focuses exclusively on any one single poet musician. Her earlier works are: ‘Thyagaraja Ramayanam,’ a solo feature using Thyagaraja krithis, while Jayadeva’s Gita Govindam formed the base of ‘Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum.’  ‘Mohana... Krsna beckons’ was inspired by Uthukadu Venkata Kavi while ‘Sri Rama Namam- Entha Ruchi Ra’ was spun with Bhakta Ramadas krithis, and ‘Taalapatra – Hymns from the Hills’ featured Annamacharya krithis.

Says Ananda: “The lyrical beauty and the musical genius of Annamacharya beckoned me often. Early last year, Satthiraju Venu Madhav, a bright and rising star on the firmament of Carnatic music, released a book and CD named Annamayya Padamandakini, with 108 Annamayya krithis  tuned and sung by him.  Based on these compositions, I had then choreographed ‘Taala Patra – Hymns from the Hills.’

While choreographing ‘Taalapatra’ I had promised myself that I would present a separate work based on  Annamayya’s  Shringara sankeerthanas  alone and capture the love and romance between the divine couple - Goddess Alamelumanga and Lord Venkateswara. Thus evolved Shringara Darpanam, a solo ekaharya production, with rare sankeerthanas of Annamayya, set to music by Sathiraju Venumadhav and one song composed by Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma.”

The programme is open to all.
